10/08/12 - Matthew 4; Luke 4 - 5

S - Matthew 4:1 - Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit in to the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.  2 And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.  3 And the tempter came and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread."  4 But he answered, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"  5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple  6 and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, 'He will command his angels concerning you,' and 'On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.'"  7 Jesus said to him, "Again it is written, 'You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.'"  8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.  9 And he said to him, "All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me."  10 Then Jesus said to him, "Be gone, Satan!  For it is written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.'"  11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.
O - My child whom I love, today I want to tell you . . . I have been where you are.  I have been tempted.  I struggled through it.  And I had been fasting for forty days before it came on me.  So I know what kind of strength it takes to overcome those temptations.  But, the good news is, if I can do it, so can you.  And, not only that, but I am here to help you through it.  So when you feel the devil coming in to your space and telling you to do something that you know you shouldn't, all you have to do is call on me and then, in my name, tell him to leave.  Say it with authority and in my name and he knows that he has to leave you alone.  I promise that I will always be there for you.
A - So, knowing that Jesus was tempted and he did not sin.  He had been fasting for forty days and was exhausted and tired, and yet he resisted the devil and his temptations.  I can surely call on him to help me at any time.  Having been through it himself, I know that he will understand my struggles.  So, when I feel the call of temptation, I will call on the Lord my God to strengthen me and help me defeat the devil, as he once did.
P - Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times when I give in to the temptations of this world.  Forgive me for the sins that that leads me to commit.  Give me the strength to defeat the devil when he comes to me and tempts me with the desires of the world.  Help me to remember to come to you seeking strength and guidance when this happens.  Give me the desire to seek you rather than those things.
